You can use various household items to dose your aquarium and achieve a bacteria population that can handle heavy feedings or stocking conditions. Sugar, vodka, vinegar, and even rice can be used to aid in your aquarium filtration. If dosed properly, these items will provide a steady carbon source for nitrifying bacteria, which convert ammonia and nitrates to nitrates (eventually). Be careful in how you dose, as excess dosing can lead to all sorts of issues down the road.
