Red mangroves are a great tool to rid your aquarium of high nitrate levels. But a lot of aquarists utilize them inappropriately. Don’t put the roots into the sand. Instead, suspend the plant well above the sand bed and let the roots grown downward. Exposed roots are where nitrate and other nutrients are absorbed and they should be exposed to the water column.
