Even though a coral may die back to a great extent, it can recover and eventually reach colony size once again. After removing the issue that caused the recession, all that is needed is good water quality and a lot of patience. You might have to frag the coral to increase your chances for survival, but the necrosis may stop prior to requiring that. Increased water flow will also help.
