Hermit crabs are great scavengers, but they can also be opportunistic predators. When new saltwater snails are introduced into your tank, they are stressed and have to deal with a new environment. The hermits, whether attracted by pure curiosity or smelling the stress in the water, immediately explore the snails and will attack them. The new snails may survive the onslaught, but many fall victim to the hermits, who not only get a meal but also a new home.
