Air stones are great at distributing bubbles in air pump powered protein skimmers and buckets of livestock that require aeration, but the stones have the tendency to dissolve gradually over the long term. The material from the air stones isn’t harmful to aquarium inhabitants, but it can be ingested by fish and corals that accidentally get exposed. Because of this, wooden air blocks are much more suitable. They don’t breakdown like the air stones, but they do have a tendency of getting clogged, so it’s wise to replace them regularly.
