Even though the refugium can be a place where nasty bristlworms reside and unruly aquarium inhabitants are banished, the algae-based filter and amphipod farm can actually be quite an attractive site. The seagrasses and algae that grow in the “fuge” offer up a whole new world that is completely different than the reef sitting just a couple of feet above. For this reason, some hobbyists are turning to the display refugium. This setup is not employed by too many aquarium keepers at the moment, but if done right, it can be a visually pleasing addition to any aquarium. Not to mention, you can see all of the amazing life that crawls around in the fuge and be a little different from other aquarium keepers.
