When purchasing a new bucket of salt, be sure to shake it up, roll it around, and mixed it up as much as possible. As funny as that sounds, it can actually be quite helpful as the salt in the container will become stratified. By that, we mean that over time or when the salt is being shipped, the smaller grains of salt will work their way down to the bottom of the container, while the larger grains will be displaced toward the top. This can happen to new buckets or opened buckets, and it can happen over short periods of time. By performing this step before mixing up a fresh batch of saltwater, the salt will be more uniformly distributed in the bucket, allowing for the most consistent mixing from water change to water change. This step may also prevent cloudiness and other issues when making new water.
