Tip of the Day – 10/22/2012

Filter socks, canister filters, filter floss, and any other form of mechanical filtration may remove large and small particles from the water column, but unless the filters are changed, they do nothing for the chemical aspect of organic waste removal. The organic material stays trapped on the filters, but it still decays and releases ammonia and other compounds into the water that can eventually lead to unwanted algae growth. To prevent this from happening, it’s very important to replace filter material on a very regular basis. So, breakdown canister filters every few weeks, change out filter socks every coupe of days, and do whatever you can to remove the waste material from the water before it can break down.
