Picture of the Week, Commensal Acropora Crab

Beneficial Acro Crab

Can you spot the crab living in this Acropora colony? It doesn’t exactly blend in, and you can spot it hanging out in the middle of the colony. It’s not one of those harmless looking bandit crabs, however. Instead, the crab in this colony is a of the fuzzy variety and looks like a miniature version of the loathed gorilla crab. But this Acro crab isn’t an aquarium nuisance like the gorilla crab. This one actually protects the coral from potential invaders like flatworms and lives peacefully within the branches of the colony.
