For aquarists on a budget, sometimes it’s quicker and easier to create DIY equipment than to save up the coin to buy used or new items. And you might be surprised as to what can be built from scratch. All you need is a little MacGuyver like know-how and access to the proper tools and materials. Virtually all manner of aquarium lighting can be built from the ground up, with things like reflectors and heatsinks being the easiest to fabricate. Even aquarium chillers, protein skimmers, and surge devices can be built at home, and all on a tight budget.
