When selecting your fish, be sure to try to accommodate to their swimming behaviors as much as possible. This might mean creating large areas of open swimming space for fish like tangs, large open areas in the sand for gobies, or top notch perching spots for hawkfish. And since we mix lots of species together, usually, you’ll probably need some combination of different spaces. On top of all that, it’s best to also provide certain other features in your tank to help your livestock feel more at home. Besides the usual caves and other hiding spaces, other fish like to sit out in the open, but camouflaged. Frogfish, for example, often mimic vibrantly colored sponges, so adding in one of those might help.
