One of the major milestones to the aquarium setup process is getting to the point where the tank basically takes care of itself. When the aquarist reaches this cruise control timeframe, there is little that needs to be done outside of routine maintenance…and this is where people falter. Your tank should never be on cruise control, in our opinions. Instead, you should be constantly checking water parameters, monitoring livestock health, and responding to conditions in a way that would require you to get your hands dirty. Don’t just settle for bi-weekly water changes, random skimmer cleanings, and daily feeding. Make that tank shine with extra effort and avoid falling into the rut.
