When installing pumps in the plumbing network of your aquarium, the best thing for long-term maintenance is to make it all as modular as possible. To accomplish that, install union fittings before the intake and after the output. Not only that, but adding valves will help isolate the equipment so that you can truly take it offline without spilling water all over the place. The best combination of these two (unions and valves) comes in the form if the double union ball (or gate) valve, which has two unions and a valve in between.
