When purchasing new fish from a local fish store, there are a few things you should consider before making the purchase. For starters, is the fish healthy? Check the fins for tears, look for any signs it is starving, and make sure its color is vibrant. Check for any visible signs of parasites (such as Ich) or diseases. You might also ask for the fish to be fed prior to deciding on an individual. If the fish eats, chances are it will take food in your aquarium as well. If the fish is curious about food but doesn’t readily eat it, it’s still a good sign, but take extra precaution with this individual. Fish that don’t eat or even remotely seem interested in the food are those you should probably stay away from.
