Many hobbyists use a 24-hour, constant light cycle for their macroalgae in hopes that it will cinstantly grow and remove nutrients. While this might follow a logical path, the truth is that periods of darkness are vital to a plant’s growth. Various cycles occur during the nighttime that benefit the plant and help with the overall photosynthetic processes, so it is is important to provide a lengthy period of darkness. On top of that, lengthy periods of illumination can inhibit plant growth.
