Sometimes having all of the equipment to run a successful reef aquarium just isn’t in the cards. You may want to have a giant skimmer, large sump, populated refugium, and all of the other bells and whistles that you think you need. However, not every setup has the space underneath the aquarium to accommodate all of these gadgets. When faced with this issue, the hobbyist must pick and choose what equipment is more important to the overall health of the aquarium. For example, is a sump and protein skimmer more vital than a refugium full of macroalgae? Every aquarium is different, and the livestock in the tank should determine the equipment needed.
