Bumblebee snails (Engina sp.) are often sold to aquarium keepers, usually under the label reef safe. Unfortunately though, this label isn’t exactly fitting. This attractive little snail does eat detritus and uneaten fish food, but it is a carnivore that might develop a taste for other things. When there’s not enough food in the tank, the bumblebee snail can and will nibble on other snails in the aquarium. This may not kill the victim snail, but it may make them more susceptible to attack from other critters like hermit crabs.
