Even though the use of dry rock has become quite popular for initially setting up an aquarium, it’s isn’t without its drawbacks. One of the major flaws in this approach that aquarium keepers have noticed is the fact that dried rock tends to leach out phosphate, and at fairly significant levels. Despite cooking the rock and rinsing it repeatedly in freshwater, it can still release a good deal of phosphate, causing significant algae growth issues. Some hobbyists have even reported high phosphate levels after the aquarium has been set up for 6 months, and this is without any livestock or other nutrient sources being present.
