While protein skimmers are often large, heavy duty pieces of equipment, they can also be quite fragile. The plastic pieces can easily break, causing everything from minor chips that are only aesthetic to cracks that can render the skimmer totally useless. So, when moving your skimmer around, breaking it down for cleaning, or just tinkering with it in general, don’t assume that it can’t be broken in some way. Always manipulate things cautiously and deliberately. If something does break, chances are it can be repaired or replaced, so don’t go throwing anything until you completely rule out any of repair possibilities.
