When breaking down a new aquarium, one of the hardest things to remove is the sand, and it’s often forgotten about until the very end. After all of the water and rocks have been removed, that pesky sand has to be manually scooped out, which is a back breaking and time consuming process. Fortunately, there’s a really quick way to remove the sand if you plan the tank teardown process. Instead of draining all of the water first, try siphoning out the sand into buckets before hand. The sand will easily vacuum out of the tank, and if you run out of water then you can always add more. Another thing you can do to help the process along is use a powerhead to push the sand to one side, which is especially helpful as the sand starts to diminish.
