Looking to add a starfish to your reef or marine aquarium? If so, be sure to keep in mind the fact that starfish, just like fish and corals, all have different requirements that need to be met in order to be healthy. Good water quality is a no brainer, but it’s the type of food that is available that will be the limiting factor. Different starfish eat a huge variety of things. While many will thrive on detritus and leftover fish food, some specialize by eating hydrozoans, sponges, specific types of algae, etc. And because of their borderline voracious appetite, they’ll quickly deplete the aquarium of their lone food source and will eventually starve to death. So, try to limit yourself to starfish that are known to thrive in captivity and avoid those that have specialized diets.
