When picking the material that you will be growing coral frags on, be sure to look at natural alternatives to the standard issue ceramic and stone frag plugs. Dead coral skeletons make for a great place to grow corals, and plating Montipora corals are especially easy to use because they provide a flat surface that can be easily broken off to form individual “plugs”. If you don’t have any dead coral skeletons laying around, be sure to hit up the local scene. Aquarium keepers usually have a touch of hording built right into their personalities, so one of them is bound to have a dead coral skeleton that they aren’t using.
