Tip of the Day – 1/30/2013

Just because a particular animal is sold to the marine aquarium industry doesn’t automatically make it ideal for your tropical marine aquarium. Many hobbyists think that everything accessible with their credit card can go into their aquariums. Unfortunately, for some species, this simply is not the case. Blue spot jawfish provide a great example. While they are very attractive and fun to watch in captivity, they don’t do so great in a warm, tropical environment. They may last for a while, but they do best in aquariums with cooler water temperatures and deep sand beds made. More often than not, they don’t live long in the 80 degree marine tanks, though certainly will in some cases. The same can be said for many snail species, as they prefer cooler waters as well.
