Many of the corals in our aquariums that are seemingly harmless to other tank inhabitants are actually quite the opposite. In fact, most corals have some type of defense system that can ward off invading neighbors or even kill fish that wander too closely. These defense mechanisms usually involved long tentacles or mesenterial filaments, which can touch corals sitting close by, killing tissue and even entire colonies. Soft corals have a broadcast mechanism of their own, which involves terpenoid compounds that can stunt the growth of other coral species.
