Did you know that you can perform a water change without using a single pump? Sure, mixing the salt and water does require some constant agitation, but performing the actual change can all be done with gravity and siphoning. After turning off the pumps and getting the tank ready for the water change, just siphon out the desired amount of water with vinyl tubing. After removing the old water, you can either dump buckets full of new water back into the tank (or sump) or elevate them above the aquarium and siphon the new water into the aquarium. Either way, you’re not using a pump to do the work. Of course, using water pumps does speed up the process and makes things more convenient, but in a pinch, you can get by without them.
