Tip of the Day – 10/1/2013

October is upon us, and that means cooler weather is on its way. While it is still a little warm out, now is the perfect time to start weather proofing your aquarium against the elements. The winter months, or really any time where extreme temperatures are present, are particularly troublesome for reef aquariums, as corals can’t cope with large water temperature swings. So, inspect your heaters and make sure you have adequate heating capacity, because maintaining the optimal temperature will be quite hard when it’s snowing outside. Speaking of snow, while the weather is still good, be sure to purchase a generator if you do not have one. When that ice starts knocking down the power lines, all of your heaters won’t be worth diddly squat if they aren’t getting any power.
