One way to increase your success in reefkeeping is to meticulously document each item you put into the tank (additive, media, etc.) and track how the tank responds to those, or any other changes. Obviously, testing water parameters is an essential part of tracking what happens to the water quality, so do it often and use quality test kits and devices. With this approach, assuming you don’t do too much too fast, you can better pinpoint the source of any problem that arises. For example, if you start dosing a particular calcium additive and your corals start responding negatively, then you know what caused it. If you change too many things at once, it’s a little harder to narrow down what is causing problems.
