Tip of the Day – 1/14/2014

Many people run a macroalgae filled refugium in order to have a natural filter that absorbs things like nitrate and phosphate. In the past several years, however, hobbyists have been experimenting with the refugium concept, going with either an algae turf scrubber (ATS) or even using soft corals like Xenia instead of the algae. In either situation, the driving force is nutrient control, but did you know that Tridacnid clams are also frequently used in their own filtering aquarium? Clams readily take up many of the same nutrients as algae, and they look a whole lot better too. So, next time you are wanting to set up a new refugium, you might just want to make it a display clam tank instead.
