We love anemones…whether they be bubbly or the carpet type. From the vivid colors and the unique relationship they form with clownfish, they just fascinate us. Like all types of aquarium livestock, there are holy grail anemones that really catch the eye of the hobby, and for carpet anemones specifically, the red Haddoni (Stichodactyla haddoni) has always held that stature. But every once in a while, there is a carpet anemone that raises the bar so much further, and in this case it’s the red rainbow carpet from Sexy Corals.
According to a post on Reef2Reef (see link above), the anemone has been at the Sexy Corals facility for over two months, and clearly doing well. It sports a vibrant red coloration that is primarily limited to the outer edge, with greens and yellows scattered randomly all over. The red rainbow carpet anemone measures 14-16 inches across, and apparently sold for $1100…a jaw dropping price for an anemone but easily justifiable given its color. On that note, you know you’re a true aquarium nerd if you try to rationalize spending over a grand on an anemone, but I digress.
As far as rarity goes, this is not the first rainbow carpet anemone that we’ve seen, but we certainly do see very many of them. Interestingly, the last one we saw also came from Sexy Corals, when they had a smaller rainbow carpet anemone a couple of years ago. We’re thinking someone might have an unfair competitive edge with the rainbow carpet ‘nems.
