Tip of the Day – 4/10/2014

Almost every reef aquarist, at some point or another, runs into a real estate issue in their tank. The tiny coral frags that you packed into your reef are quickly growing closer and closer to each other, and there just isn’t any room to add new pieces. Sure, you could frag a bunch of corals to make room, or you could even go so far as to move colonies or rocks just to have new territory to populate. Some hobbyist even resort to putting corals down in the sand. If you’re running into confinement issues, we highly recommend two things: a frag tank and a larger display tank. Both of these options should give you more room, and both will do it in totally different ways. The frag tank will offer you a place to house any frags that you make, potentially freeing up space in your display aquarium if you have been storing coral fragments there. You could even use the frag tank as a permanent home for some of your favorite corals that refuse to get rid of but don’t want to crowd your tank with. As for upgrading the display, well, that’s a no brainer. Bigger tank means more room, but chances are you might outgrow that one as well.
