Every once in a while, when conditions are just right, LPS and other corals toss off all of their polyps in what is known as polyp bailout. When this happens, the coral is usually stressed, hoping that it can set its polyps adrift to find refuge in a more suitable area. For our aquariums, thus means there is some stressor on the tank that the coral doesn’t like, and while you can save the polyps (assuming you can collect them), there is usually an underlying issue that needs to be addresses…like water quality. With the water corrected, the parent colony might recover and you might end up with several frags from the polyps that were tossed. It’s not an easy task to rescue corals under these conditions, but it can happen.
