Tip of the Day – 1/12/2015

Every once in a while, an LPS coral will toss off one or more of its polyps. This isn’t the sort of slow death that occurs with SPS, rather, the coral is jettisoning a fully mature polyp in hopes that it will land somewhere more suitable and regrow into a colony. This bailout technique is stressful to both the coral and the hobbyist, but if you time it just right, you can snatch up the drifting polyp and place it in an adequate location to grow. Sumps are great places to stash these loose polyps, as they offer up low flow refuges that will allow the polyp to encrust onto the rocks.
