The 2010 International Marine Aquarium Conference (IMAC) West conference that had been scheduled for the end of this month has been canceled. A page on the IMAC website cites “unforeseen circumstances and the resulting time constraints”, and claims that the conference will now happen every two years starting in May 2011. All five conference organizers have day jobs and other responsibilities, so it is conceivable that something happened to halt the massive amount of planning necessary to make it happen. However, we also know that attendance at the 2009 event was extremely disappointing, and many vendors openly expressed frustration at the low turnout and other circumstances. Hopefully this isn’t a sign that the wheels are falling off altogether for IMAC; those of us on the west coast can definitely benefit from an aquarium event like this, and Los Angeles was the perfect location for hobbyists and industry people to get together.
This is, of course, doubly disappointing since we’d been hoping to bring some coverage to our blog readers from the event. There are almost always some interesting new product showcases and great talks from experts that would have made for great blog content. We’ll be sure to stay on top of any developments surrounding IMAC and report them here.
