Tip of the Day – 3/3/2011

The minimalist approach to aquascaping is currently a very trendy one. However, this method significantly reduces the areas where fish can hide or graze, and it limits the area where weird and unusual organisms like sponges and tunicates can grow. While most people don’t care for these unusual animals, they can be beneficial to your system by providing diversity and food sources for many different fish. Not to mention, less rocks means fewer spots for coral frags or colonies to be attached to. All that being said, I personally favor the look of fewer rocks over the old rock walls of the past, as the tank looks less cluttered and focuses your attention more on the corals. But don’t be afraid to put some rocks in the tank.
