Handling live rock and other items in your aquarium can lead to cuts on the hands of the hobbyist, which can lead to nasty infections. To prevent damaging yourself, try wearing nitrile gloves, or even the really long gloves that go all the way to your elbow. The gloves are cheap and readily available, and may prevent a trip to the local emergency room. If you do experience a cut on your hand, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and apply some sort of anti-bacterial ointment to prevent an infection.
