Auto top offs are great tools for automizing regular tank maintenance, but they can also be very dangerous. Float valves and switches can fail, causing your aquarium to be inundated with fresh water. This could either flood the tank and ruin the floor or other equipment, or drop the salinity in the aquarium and kill your livestock.
