Engineer gobies and other sand sifting fish or invertebrates can do a lot of digging. Sometimes they can even get underneath rocks. If the sand below the rockwork is removed, it could cause your entire aquascaping to shift. If things shift, corals could break or sting each other, or rocks could hit the glass.
