Some desirable aquarium algae can actually compete with corals for calcium. Halimeda sp., for example, are calcareous plants that require higher calcium and alkalinity levels to thrive. If your water doesn’t have enough of these elements, the plant will turn white and dissolve. Regardless, Halimeda is a very attractive plant that is still somewhat unique to reef aquariums since not too many people put it in their tanks.
