If your aquarium has a glass centerbrace, be sure to clean it regularly. Older style tanks have very large glass centerbraces and these can be magnets for thick algae. This algae will grow wherever water gets onto the glass brace and will block out tremendous amounts of light. Some aquarists have found ways to remove this brace, but doing this sort of alteration makes me a bit nervous, as the brace does serve some function other than to annoy us.
