Basements can be a great place to store your sump, refugium, or any other aquarium equipment. The display aquarium can sit on the ground level of your home, and all of the unattractive equipment can be stored out of sight. Obviously you would need a way to get water from the basement equipment upstairs to the aquarium, and a high pressure pump would do the trick. These pumps use a lot of energy, but they can still achieve decent water flow rates at head heights of 20 feet or more. If you don’t want to hassle with this type of arrangement, you could always put the aquarium in the basement and create yourself a reef inspired “man cave”.
