Skimmate collectors can be very useful if your protein skimmer produces a lot of skimmate over a short period of time or you frequently forget to empty the collection cup. These devices simply drain your collection cup using gravity, but some are even wired so that they can shut the protein skimmer off if the collector gets too full. This functionality may seem like overkill, but it will protect your floor and the inside of you aquarium stand from the nasty skimmate that could overflow from the skimmer cup.
