When researching potential livestock for your aquarium, that minimum tank sizes and water conditions are a suggestion, and should be treated as such. They hold some weight, but ideally they are in place to be a general guideline and do not take other aspects into account. For example, an online vendor may have an arbitrary minimum gallon rating for a particular fish, but they have no idea what other fish are in the tank or what future residents will be in there as well.
