Blue Maxima Clam Close Up
Pictured in this week’s Picture of the Week is a blue Tridacna maxima clam. This clam, like many clams bought in this hobby, is aquacultured. Most aquacultured clams come attached to a small piece of live rock, one that it has probably been sitting on its entire life. As it got older, the clam actually broke the rock it was attached to. This shouldn’t come as a shock as these clams typically secrete acids to bore into rocks to some extent. This boring activity is also seen to a greater extent in T. crocea clams.
