CoralVue BIO-Sphere Media

CoralVue finally has their own media to pair with their media reactors. The company, which is best known for the metal halide pendants and Reef Octopus protein skimmers, is climbing into the bio pellet game with a solid carbon media of their own. Much like all of the other bio pellet media currently available, the BIO-Sphere media serves as a food source for bacteria populations that reduce nitrates and phosphates in the aquarium. Two sizes are currently being offered, 500ml and 1000ml, and CoralVue recommends using 100-150ml of media per 100gallons of actual water volume. They also suggest gently tumbling the media in a reactor to prevent the spheres from becoming covered in slime. The slime coating will not only reduce the effectiveness of the media, but it can also cause an anaerobic environment on the media’s surface, which could potentially lead to the release of harmful hydrogen sulfide.

The price for the 500ml bag of BIO-Spheres is $50, with the 1000ml being priced at $80.

CoralVue BIO-Sphere Closeup

Bio-Spheres are a specifically designed pure solid carbon source created to help reduce nitrates and phosphates within a marine environment. By encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria and enzymes on the media’s surface, this pure self regulating media continuously provides a food source required for beneficial bacteria to reproduce and metabolize nitrates and phosphates.

Directions for use:

Use 100 – 150ml of Bio-Spheres per 100 gallons of system volume. Rinse the Bio-Spheres with purified fresh water and place in a properly sized fluidized media reactor with sufficient flow to keep them gently simmering. If they start to clump or slime up, they will be less effective and may turn anaerobic causing the production of hydrogen sulfide. The Reef Octopus BioPellet Reactor is most effective with this product. Direct the output of the reactor into the same area as the protein skimmer intake. Within 3-4 weeks the Bio-Spheres will be sufficiently colonized with bacteria and will begin to reduce organic compounds. Aquariums with high bio-loads may experience a short period of temporary water cloudiness.

Maintain:

Bio-Spheres will remain effective until they disappear, which normally take approximately 8 months to a year. We recommend that you top off with fresh Bio-Spheres every 3 months to maintain maximum effectiveness.
