When purchasing used equipment, make sure to clean it thoroughly in a vinegar bath prior to using it on your aquarium. The equipment can have all sorts of gunk built up on it, and there’s no telling how thoroughly the previous owner cleaned it or cared for it. Giving the equipment a good cleaning will remove any calcium build up that might prevent the device from working properly, and it will get rid of any excess decaying organic waste that could foul up your water.
