Certain filter media can actually leach out phosophate and other algae promoting nutrients. These include, but aren’t limited to, certain carbon media and even aragonite for calcium reactors. To prevent these from becoming phosphate sources, rinse them thoroughly in RO/DI water prior to using them. This will not prevent the media from leaching out phosphate 100%, but it will reduce the amount released, keeping algae down to a manageable amount.
