Sometimes adding a lot of salt to a new batch of freshwater causes the water to become very cloudy and stay that way for a while. To prevent this, add small amounts of salt over a longer period of time. This allows the salt to dissolve more quickly and more thoroughly, and also allows the hobbyist to fine tune the salinity of the newly mixed saltwater. Unfortunately, this method forces the hobbyist to take a more hands on approach to mixing salt, but the benefits far outweigh the added effort.
