Occasionally breaking down pumps and various other pieces of aquarium equipment is always a good idea for preventative maintenance, but every once in a while you should give your equipment a solid deep cleaning. Completely disassemble every item, cleaning every single part of the equipment. Use a combination of freshwater and vinegar, or some other aquarium equipment safe solution, and scrub away with a toothbrush or something else that has rigid bristles. Make sure all calcium deposits and algae growth have been removed, as these can alter the performance of the equipment and even damage it once it’s up and running again.
