When adding new powerheads or repositioning pumps already in the tank, don’t just tinker with them and walk away. Adjust them where you want them to flow, but also monitor how the aquarium responds after the pumps have been put in place. The long-term effects of the additional water movement may not be readily seen right away. After being in use for a while, the sand may begin to stir up or corals may be blown over. If that happens, just readjust the pumps and start looking for issues once again. Repeat this process until the pumps are moving water where it needs to be but not harming the aquarium livestock or creating sand storms in the process.
