Even though that trusty protein skimmer, refractometer, or pH probe have been working flawlessly for months, it’s still a good idea to break down these and other pieces of equipment for regular maintenance or recalibration. Chances are there is nothing wrong with any of these items, but preventative maintenance can prevent a problem from ever ocurring. For example, if your pH probe is never serviced, its readings could drift to the point your calcium reactor is dumping too much or too little calcium back into the aquarium. Preventative maintenance, on the other hand, allows the equipment to work at optimum levels and it may even reveal issues that you can fix before a real problem happens.
